The Legacy of Thermo King
In the 1940s, Frederick McKinley Jones, an African American inventor and entrepreneur, patented the first air-cooling unit for trucks carrying perishable food. This groundbreaking invention revolutionized the transportation of perishable goods, paving the way for the frozen food industry, large supermarkets, and the restaurant sector as we know them today. He founded the U.S. Thermo Control Company, which later became Thermo King Corp. In 1997, Trane Technologies acquired Thermo King, solidifying its position as the leader in climate control technologies.
Today, Thermo King’s innovative units are installed in a wide variety of vehicles beyond semi-trailers. These include cargo containers, small insulated vehicles for small businesses such as caterers and florists, and medium-sized box trucks. Thermo King also provides climate control systems for public transportation buses, railway trains, and even the sleeper cabs of tractor trucks, demonstrating its versatility and commitment to quality in climate control solutions.
